Ah, El Capitan. It's one of the most majestic pieces of rock in Yosemite. It shoots into the center of the valley and demands to be worshiped during the day. At sunset El Cap burns orange and beacons hikers, climbers, and campers to rest their weary bones in the warm prairies beneath his shelf. When the sky turns dark tiny pinpoints of light will appear on his face as climbers spending the night on El Cap turn on their headlamps in anticipation of the cold, long hours ahead of them. A friend of mine climbed the Zodiac route on El Cap last fall. It took him and his climbing partner four days and three nights to make the ascent - while carrying 64 pounds of water with them!
